LAURA

GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION: 317 km north of Cairns

Now almost a forgotten town, Laura, with only a pub, police station and a few houses, was a popular little town in
the 1880s as it was the Pamer River goldfield's railhead handling 20 000 passengers a year. The surrounding
country contains Aboriginal paintings going back 15 000 years and dipicting Quinkans, spirit figures of native
mythology. There are a few facilities here including a general store, petrol station and a hotel-motel. In the
district of Laura is Quinkin Country that extends to the coastline of Princess Charlotte Bay. Split Rock is the most
frequently visited by tourists in the Laura area, although there are hundreds of painter rock shelters worth seeing
throughout the district.
