GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION:

Bamaga is a small town which is situated only 40km from the very northern tip of the cape. About 11km south
of the cape is Somerset which was established in 1863 as the administrative area. It was even thought at one
time that it might become a major trading centre, a sort of Singapore of north Queensland, but in 1877 its
functions were shifted to Thursday Island. There are flights between Cairns and Bamaga and there are also
flights available to Thursday Island. There is also a weekly boat to Thursday Island and Cairns every 10 to
12 days. Since Bamaga is only a small Aboriginal community at the top of the peninsula, the facilities here are
very limited. Its main advantage being its accessibility to Thursday Island.
