Herberton

HERBERTON

GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION: 150 km south-west of Cairns
POPULATION: Approx. 600

Pioneers called this place the land of 1000 hills. Today a tin plant still works in the gully which runs
through what was for many years the biggest tin town on the Tableland. Every year a colourful tin
festival is held each September. Several buildings and installations dating from its boom add faded
charm including old timber towns and campsites from World War II. Willie Jack and John Newell in 1880
found the lode which became the rich Great Northern and the store of pit-sawn cedar they built with
their profits has still stayed in business. A school of arts which in 1881 housed the first meeting of a
local authority on the Tableland has been restored. A major attraction here is the Tin Pannikan, a local
museum in an old hotel which has been rebuilt like a well known cartoon pub. Just south-east of here
is Hypipamee National Park.
