MALANDA

GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION: 84 km south-west of Cairns

Malanda is claimed to have the longest milkrun in Australia since its dairy industry supplies milk all the
way to Mt Isa, Darwin and even the north of Western Australia. An equivalent in the USA could be be
a dairy in California supplying milk all the way up to a town in New York state! Just north of the town
are the Malanda Falls which drop into a pleasant swimming hole. There are also great rainforest in this
area containing primitive ferns, giant trees and clear mountain streams. Giant strangler fig trees are
present here too, one of the best trees to see, the Curtain Fig Tree can be seen here just above
Atherton at Yungaburra. Yungaburra also contains some interesting historical sites. Also nearby is Lake
Eacham where you can relax, swim, picnic, canoe or explore the surrounding walking tracks.
