Ravenshoe

RAVENSHOE

GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION: 133 km south-west of Cairns
POPULATION: Approx. 900

Ravenshoe (pronounced 'ravens-ho' not 'raven-shoe') is at the edge of the tableland and has been
dubbed the 'gateway to the Gulf' since the road continues through here to Croydon and Normanton.
The area is well noted for its fine timbers and gemstones. Waterfalls are also featured in this area.
Millstream Falls drop only 20m but they are 60m wide and generally acknowledged as the broadest in
Australia. The liitle Millstream Falls are only a couple of kilometres out of Ravenshoe on the Tully
Gorge road. The town is named after a novel of the same name, a copy of which is said to have been
found near the remains of a camp. If you continue south the Tully Gorge lookout is 25 km out but it has
lost some of its flow due to hydro-electric projects. There are various watersport facilities available at
the Koombooloomba Dam. The mining town of Mt Garnet is 47 km west of Ravenshoe, on the way you
pass the Innot Hot Springs, a sight not to be missed.
