GORDONVALE
GENERAL INFORMATION
LOCATION:
24 km south of Cairns
POPULATION:
Approx. 6000
Gordonsvale is a small sugar town just off the highway, overshadowed by the cone of Walsh's Pyramid,
which rises steeply to 922m and overlooked from the west by the Isley Hills. The town was once called
Mulgrave and at another stage Nelson before Gordonvale was settled as a tribute to John Gordon, a
pioneer in the district. Just above Gordonvale is Cairns and there is also a winding Gillies Highway from
here which leads all the up to the tablelands. Gordonvale is only a short drive from many interesting
places including the Bellenden Ker National Park and Goldsborough Valley State Forest. Several
kilometres southeast from here is the Craters Lakes National Park which contains two popular tourist
attractions Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham which are surrounded by rainforest and an abundance of
wildlife. Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham are two of the most impressive of several extinct craters on the
Tableland. The cores, which are now lakes, are the result of an eruption about 10 000 years ago. They
are now filled with rainwater.
