Cardwell

CARDWELL

GENERAL INFORMATION

LOCATION: 203 km south of Cairns
POPULATION: Approx. 1200

Cardwell is a sleepy town but it once was the most important gateway to the interior. Before Cooktown
was settled in 1873 Cardwell was the only port between Bowen and Somerset on the tip of Cape York.
Etheridge field gold was shipped from here. Near the church is a memorial intended as a grave stone
for a pioneer who lived in Valley of Lagoons, 100km over the mountains. It was too heavy to take over
the peaks. Lower slopes of Cardwell Range almost reach into the village. The road south of Cardwell
climbs high up above the coast with tremendous views down across the winding waterways known as
Everglades which separate Hinchinbrook from the coast. There are good views across Rockingham
Bay too. From Cardwell there are boat trips to Hinchinbrook, the Everglades and other islands. All the
way from Brisbane to Cairns this is the only town on the Bruce Highway which is actually on the coast.
At Victoria street the Wishbone Tree is a local gallery and museum and nearby are the Murray Falls
with fine rock pools for swimming and the Edmund Kennedy National Park.
